Fat Thursday (tłusty czwartek)

Before we indulge ourselves in pancakes, it’s time for doughnut day!

Yes – that’s what the Polish Fat Thursday is all about. This year, Polish people will have eaten approximately one hundred million doughnuts on Fat Thursday (12 February) alone, which is almost three doughnuts per person! Can you handle that? I certainly can!

How to make Polish doughnuts (pączki)?

Pączki (the plural of pączek) can be made in the same way as any other doughnuts. Most Polish doughnuts, though, have fruit jelly or jam, rather than cream or chocolate, in the centre.

Jenny Can Cook has an easy-to-follow video tutorial, in which she will show you how to make a batch ready for Fat Thursday!

Pączki are delicious with some icing and caramelised orange or lemon peel sprinkled on top.

Make sure you make loads and remember they don’t keep well so eat them all on the same day!

Pączki ingredients in Polish

This post is not just about food, though! You need to learn some Polish as well. Here are some of the main ingredients of Polish pączki:

Mąka – flour

Mleko – milk

Cukier – sugar

Olej – oil

Dżem – jam

And here’s a useful phrase to use when eating your yummy doughnuts:

Uwielbiam pączki! – I love doughnuts!
